Jessica Mauboy - Inescapable [Music Video Premiere]
So it appears Get 'Em Girls isn't dead yet. Aussie pop diva Jessica Mauboy enjoyed some massive success with her debut album's six successful singles which firmly placed her as Aussie's Stars To Watch. Then she recorded and released the ghetto Beyonce-esque single Get 'Em Girls which was Jessica going all 'look guys, I can really do the urban/dance sexy style of music too!'. But the music video got it all wrong and she fell off the tracks. Quickly, she hopped onto the dance/pop trend and managed to score a Aussie Top 10 hit Saturday Night which eventually went Platinum, then closing the entire album era with album stunner What Happened To Us featuring Jay Sean.
All in all, still underwhelming by Jessica's standards.
But then there were plans to release a new single Inescapable. A brand new album seemed too quick but we're all enlightened now. Jess and her label are planning to relaunch the flop album by injecting some new songs and throwaway remixes we've all heard before. They seemed to have gotten a couple things right so far.
First the single cover for Inescapable, showing off a clean and simple yet sophisticated look. And this continues with the deluxe edition of the Get 'Em Girls album cover below.
Top marks in my books. However, the premiere of the music video for Inescapable is where Jessica faltered again.
It's the kind of track you'd bop along nicely to on the radio when it comes on, but not good enough to make you want to find out what song is playing. Also, even though the video for Inescapable is hardly the train wreck that Get 'Em Girls was, it's way too childish and amateur for me. The track itself is too on some levels in terms of production.
Mmmm, Jess? I'll really need you to get your shit together and release the effing amazing track Dance It Off that leaked earlier this year, thanks.
Jessica Mauboy - What Happened To Us [Music Video Premiere]
Aussie pop/R&B princess recently came under fire for her tacky looking music videos - namely Get 'Em Girls and Saturday Night, which looked like they were made with a $5 promotional budget. Thus, Mauboy has taken a complete turn with her new single's music video What Happened To Us. It's my favourite cut from Jess' album and I think this could really turn out to be a hit for her. She needs to stay away from the dated R&B bangers and keep releasing pop all the way if she wants her singles/album to do well. N'awww, she looks so pretty.
Jessica Mauboy - Saturday Night [Music Video Premiere]
Aussie pop/R&B/urban songstress Jessica Mauboy's video for Saturday Night premiered yesterday but I know the video was blocked in different countries (including mine) so I had to patiently wait for a random YouTuber to post it so.. Here it is!
The video is a slight improvement from the hot mess that was Get 'Em Girls featuring Snoop Dogg, but the girl needs her old directors back, because this wasn't that great either. Dear Hype Williams, I beg you, stop destroying her videos. Thank you.
Jessica Mauboy - Saturday Night live on The X Factor Australia
Aussie pop/R&B/urban songstress Jessica Mauboy invaded The X Factor Australia with her new single Saturday Night which features American rapper Ludacris. Mauboy hasn't had much success on the charts so far but she's still getting these big promotional spots so.. Anyway, Saturday Night isn't Mauboy's strongest vocal performance, but it's a lot better than any live performance she did for Get 'Em Girls. Let's hope this does well on the charts.
Track Listing: 1. Get 'Em Girls (featuring Snoop Dogg) 2. Handle It 3. Accelerate That 4. Scariest Part 5. Saturday Night (featuring Ludacris) 6. What Happened to Us 7. Reconnected 8. Like This 9. Foreign 10. Can Anybody Tell Me 11. Fight For You 12. Maze 13. Here For Me 14. No One Like You 15. Forget Your Name (bonus track)
Part of why Aussie pop/R&B princess and Australian Idol graduate Jessica Mauboy enjoyed such success with her debut solo album Been Waiting was that it was formulaic, containing some surefire hits albeit generic songs that wasn't likely to fail at all. So when the platinum-selling songstress ditched her formulaic sound for a brand new urban sound, her target audience had some trouble adjusting to the new sound with the album's first single of the same title Get 'Em Girls and the track scraped into the Top 20 of the ARIA Singles Chart at #19.
Well, the album is finally here and if you hated the urban sound, be prepared, because Mauboy favours heavy Beyonce beats over the dance/pop sound heard on her debut album. The album opens with first single Get 'Em Girls which by a track standing on its own isn't horrid by any measure, but the music video just ruined it, so it's a rather bittersweet feeling when you re-listen to the track. The album then moves on to the even more urban sounding Handle It and Accelerate That. The album then prods on mindlessly before landing itself on Scariest Part, a nice ballad that really hits its stride when Mauboy lets loose of her vocal power on the chorus. It then returns to another uptempo number Saturday Night featuring Ludacris which is confirmed to be the album's second single. I'm not sure whether Ludacris actually improves the track but it's still catchy and will have no problem racking up some airplay Get 'Em Girls never could. The album then moves on to a tender ballad with Jay Sean called What Happened To Us which happens to be one of the album's highlights.
The next track opens with a very Coldplay Viva La Vida-esque strings section before it morphs into a very Kristinia DeBarge Powerless type of track lyrically. The next track Like This features yet another big name in the form of Iyaz. This track remains forgettable even after a couple plays though, it sounds just like a lot of the other tracks on the album without having something about it that stands out among the rest. Foreign sees Mauboy return to the urban sound that has enough sass in it to differentiate it from the other urban-sounding number Handle It. Can Anybody Tell Me is another catchy-at-first-listen but ultimately forgettable track. Toss this into the same pile as Like This suffers from.
Fight For You tries to be a cross between Jordin Spark's Battlefield and Cheryl Cole's Fight For This Love but is ultimately not as fierce as the former or brilliant as the latter. Still, don't write this off too soon, it's a grower. Maze is a solid album track that sounds like it could do well as a single but as an album track, it's just like some of the other tracks on the album so it doesn't feel like it's as good as it really is. Here For Me is another solid album track that also has potential to be a single, fitting into current Top 40 radio fare. No One Like You is a sweet ballad that is supposedly about her boyfriend which though is sweet, verges on a little boring. Forget Your Name, the bonus track sees Mauboy's smooth vocals run over a thumping beat and sounds like a fiercer version of Up/Down from her debut album though it's not half as good as the latter.
All in all, it's a solid album with a few standout tracks that do have single potential. Now if only her label would get their act together and create a good music video for second single Saturday Night. However, Hype Williams (who directed the video for Get 'Em Girls) has returned to direct the video for Saturday Night and from what I've seen of the snippet, don't expect too much, except a little cheap effects. Oh well. Still, Mauboy has the potential to rival Beyonce for her crown as the reigning pop/R&B/urban superstar on the charts if she gets some better material.
After the horrendous flop that was Get 'Em Girls, Australian pop/R&B diva has dropped the urban sound that we heard on Get 'Em Girls and has gone a little more pop to regain some steam with her next single Saturday Night featuring Ludacris. Saturday Night is moderately catchy, but I do hope it does better Get 'Em Girls, otherwise, her sophomore album Get 'Em Girls might flop as well.
But first of all, Get 'Em Girls didn't do well not because it was a horrendous song, but because of the horrendous letdown of a video. Still, it managed to debut at peak at #19 on the ARIA Singles Chart, so all hope isn't lost yet.
But why do I have a bad feeling I see some very poor computer effects of Mauboy riding in a car on a Saturday Night with the wind blowing in her hair while she has fun singing along? That scene does remind me of the horrendous computer effects that Jason DeRulo's video for Ridin' Solo suffered when DeRulo was in the car that wasn't even moving, but poor effects just spun the wheels and the background and it looked so fake.
Still. This record looks like one I'll be bumping my head to when I'm on holiday.
Big News: Listen to clips of Jessica Mauboy's upcoming album!
Pop/R&B Aussie diva Jessica Mauboy just released 30 second clips of the songs on her upcoming sophomore album Get 'Em Girls to YouTube and one thing's for certain.
She's no longer the Jessica Mauboy we saw on Australian Idol, or the Jessica Mauboy on her debut album Been Waiting. This is a new Jessica Mauboy, but not necessarily a bad one. Her trademark silky smooth vocals are still here, of course, but what differs from Been Waiting is a more urban sound than Mauboy has gone for. Although you usually can't tell much from clips, it's clear this album is a cohesive and nice sounding effort that I'm looking forward to. There's a clear standout from the clip and it's What Happened To Us featuring Jay Sean that I really really really like. The next single might be Saturday Night featuring Ludacris but please give What Happened To Us the single treatment.
Jessica Mauboy - Get 'Em Girls live @ Australian KCA
This was a mess from note one. Jess has been a mess and has delivered nothing but disappointments so far. She's much better than that. After lipsynching through her first televised performance of Get 'Em Girls, she decided to sing it live at the Australian Kids Choice Awards. Looking all glamorous, she then started to sing. I cringed. She was out of breath from note one and continued running around the stage, further wearing her vocals out, or what was left of it. At some points, she was so out of breath that she didn't sing, which led to awkward silences. Oh well. We all make mistakes.
Jessica Mauboy - Get 'Em Girls [Music Video Premiere]
Because I expected a disappointment, I'm not half as disappointed/angered as some of Jessica Mauboy's fans with her new video for Get 'Em Girls. The video is pretty much what you've seen in the clips, pictures, behind the scenes stuff so it's safe to say there wasn't going to be much of a surprise watching this video. However, while Mauboy sounds okay, she looks plain awful in that yellow, orange, red and other jumbled up colours suit that she wore in one of the scenes. But she does look great standing beside Snoop Dogg though, but he looks like more like paedophile so that was a bit. Painful.
Yuck.
Looks like her Aussie audience isn't showing much support for Get 'Em Girls, either. Not like I didn't see it coming. But you know what? I love her debut album and I think if she returns to that kind of sound, she might be a hit once again. C'mon Jessica..
Jessica Mauboy - Get 'Em Girls live @ NRL Grand Finals
Okay. So. Here's Aussie pop/R&B/urban songstress Jessica Mauboy's first live televised performance of Get 'Em Girls and I'm sorry to say I was not impressed. It's obvious to see Jess lipsynched her way through the entire performance and seemed a little tired. It just seemed like she was randomly picked out on the streets while walking back home and shoved on this stage to perform. So she wasn't bursting with any kind of energy whatsoever and the dancing was just weird.
Hopefully, some other LIVE performances will redeem this uninspiring performance. Why, Jessica, why?! Oh yes, below is the album cover which I once again, dislike. It looks too copy and paste. Hopefully the music's good.
Big News: Go behind the scenes of Jessica Mauboy's Get 'Em Girls
Aussie pop/R&B/urban diva Jessica Mauboy just gave us a sneak peek behind the upcoming clip for Get 'Em Girls, the lead single from her upcoming solo sophomore album (she was with the Young Divas for a while) of the same title. Apparently, the song was inspired by high heels (albeit not as painfully obvious as Jennifer Lopez' Louboutins) & the video will feature some high fashion and scenes where Mauboy and her girlfriends will go shoe shopping. Feature artist Snoop Dogg will play a shoe store owner. Okay then.
Mauboy is also lined up to co-host the 2010 Nickelodeon Australian Kids' Choice Awards with Liam Hemsworth and iCarly's Jerry Trainor on October 8, 2010. This could mean a performance by Mauboy herself. The album will be released November 5th, but if Get 'Em Girls doesn't take off like it should, she's already ready with the second single off the album, confirmed to be Saturday Night featuring Ludacris. Just a question, what's up with all the rent-a-rappers? Oh well.
But it shouldn't fail with major performances lined up and a guest star like Snoop Dogg. Plus, Get 'Em Girls recently debuted at #22 on the ARIA Top 40 Digital Tracks Chart.
Australian pop/R&B songstress Jessica Mauboy is returning to the music industry with her new urban/pop single Get 'Em Girls that doesn't have the energy of previous singles Up/Down or Burn but you'd better believe this is a much different direction for Mauboy. It's noticeably more urban compared to her previous singles, and I hope she doesn't lose that mainstream pop/R&B sound that I liked so much on her debut album that I thought was worthy of an international release. Get 'Em Girls features a guest rap from Snoop Dogg, which doesn't really make much of a difference to me but the track is definitely growing on me and I love the chorus. What do you think? Take a listen below!
Big News: Jessica Mauboy to return with "Get 'Em Girls"!
I should probably admit here that I loved Jessica Mauboy's debut album Been Waiting so much that it was the only album I listened to consecutively for a week earlier this year. Her debut album Been Waiting went 2x platinum in Australia thanks to the success of the six singles released from the album.
Now though, she's moving on with her sophomore album titled Get 'Em Girls set to be released on the 5th November and you can check out a snippet of the title track and lead single below.
Jessica Mauboy, runner-up on a season of Australian Idol, released her debut album Been Waiting last year and is going to release the deluxe edition of her album. Here it is, enjoy!
We review the latest in 21st century. Mostly we do pop, but it doesn't really matter, along with new music premieres, video premieres, album premieres. If the links don't work, please notify me in the cbox right below and I will post a new link in the cbox. Thanks.
Artist Of The Month. (November 2011)
The Power Rangers of British pop, The Saturdays, are returning this year with a more mature sound and image, with the girlband taking a stab at the pop/dance wave with their fourth album On Your Radar's first single Notorious being a total flip in direction in their sound, and was noticeably more clubby compared to their previous singles and albums. They then took things a level further with the complete rave-tastic All Fired Up, which is without a doubt their best single release, not surprising since the track was produced by production powerhouse Xenomania, the machine behind pretty much all of Girls Aloud's discography. The pop five-piece are charging forward with the Christmassy ballad My Heart Takes Over before their album On Your Radar drops November 21st!
