Girlfriend was the lead single for Canadian singer Avril Lavigne's third studio album The Best Damn Thing in which both the single and the album reched #1 in the US and almost everywhere else. She got in the lawsuit with this song but won it when she was accused of copying The Rubinoos' 1979 single I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend, in which they sing "Hey hey, you you, I wanna be your boyfriend" similar to "Hey hey, you you, I could be your girlfriend" in Girlfriend.
